Age: 16

1) What do you think about the camera work? - Shots, angles etc.
I think there was a nice range of shots angles, not all similar which I like.

2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc.
I think the background music fits in really well with what you see on screen.

3) What is your opinion on the storyline so far?
I think the storyline can build up into something as long as you don't stray too far from the original concept while expanding it.

4) What do you think about the acting skills?
The acting skills are quite good, not much to really say on it but some of it seems forced, without enough emotion. Example would be the scene in the garden.

5) Overall, what are your views based on appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
I love thrillers and similar genres and have watched a lot, I tend to find films that keep you on the edge of your seats to be the more enjoyable ones, especially if there are twists in the story, which as a personal view makes it even better. Predictable films are less enjoyable.

Audience Feedback 2
Gender: Female
Age: 15

1) What do you think about the camera work? - Shots, angles etc.
Camera shots and angles are well structured and varied, a certain few compliment the situation in the video for example the shot used when a character is tied to the chair. Lengths of shots are used appropriately.

2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc.
Generally the music is appropriate, but doesn't make the opening sequence as
effective as it could be. It’s not entirely varied and isn’t the strongest point but works otherwise.

3) What is your opinion on the storyline so far?
I'd say it’s quite interesting, having a child in a thriller has its advantages. Manipulating the child’s emotions and fears is an interesting concept plus it suits the genre well. The "scars" looked effective but I didn’t like looking at it - unpleasant. I'd like to know what happens to the boy now that he's fainted.

4) What do you think about the acting skills?
They are quite good; the child displayed a lot of fear from the nightmare to reality which was pretty much the concept of "A Living Nightmare". Mother and father roles are played well, typical parents.

5) Overall, what are your views based on appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
I think thrillers have some sort of psychological aspect to them, and this opening sequence fits in with it, and using a child actor instead of an adult makes it more effective. There isn't too much gore in the short clip which isn't too revealing and is appropriate for a thriller. Music could be more powerful, or used more effectively, but other than that it’s a well directed suitable clip as a thriller opening sequence.

The background music used fit perfectly to match the scenes.

3) What is your opinion on the storyline so far?
I think the storyline was pretty good, I liked the whole psychological idea, and left me wondering what had happened after he fainted.

4) What do you think about the acting skills?
The acting skills were also good and I think all the characters were great.

5) Overall, what are your views based on appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?

1) What do you think about the camera work? - Shots, angles etc
The camera angle was done very nicely as you could see the faces properly and the detail

2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc.
The use of the background music was used very effectively as it builds into the moment of the scene and even without the video you can picture what the scene would be like.

The story line so far is excellent, as it can lead to a various amount of possibilities if it had continued.

4) What do you think about the acting skills?
Acting skills was to a high standard, especially when the boy was scared and could hear the deep scary voice in the background just to show it’s a nightmare

5) Overall, what are your views based on appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
The characteristics show very well that this scene is a horror thriller because of the background music, time of day and the intense appearance in acting.

Audience Feedback 5

Gender: Male
Age: 17

1) What do you think about the camerawork? – Shots, angles etc.
It looks very similar to the films I have seen, very professional. I noticed how you took different angles, and it managed to flow very well. Although there was one part I noticed which was quite unnecessary in my opinion, which was the close-up of the boy holding the remote control, only that part bothered me, because we already saw him holding the remote, I didn’t feel a close-up really needed to be there, it kind of confused me. But other than that everything was really good.

2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc.
I really like the music; it really went well with the theme of the storyline. I began imagining an adventure was going to occur later into the film. It set a very dramatic atmosphere. I also realised how all the sound effects were not off beat and on time, everything was in sync, very nice.

3) What is your opinion on the storyline opening so far?
It looks like it would be a very exciting film, I think it was set very well. Especially in the nightmare part, I started feeling pity for him because it really seemed like he was suffering and scared.

4) What do you think about the acting skills?
I think the acting was very normal, it didn’t seem like it was too bad, it could be a little improved from the little boy, he seemed a bit nervous at the beginning, that’s what it felt like to me, but I think he done a good job in the nightmare bit. The parents were good, and the boy was very good too, I wouldn’t criticise the skills overall.

5) Overall, what are your views based on the appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
I think this is a very good thriller, and it seems like the whole film will have a great twist to it. I can’t really point out anything wrong to be honest, I liked what I saw, well done.

Audience Feedback 4

Gender: Female
Age: 18

1) What do you think about the camerawork? – Shots, angles etc.
There are different types of shots I can see, for example when you keep cutting from different perspectives, I think it’s done very well. Especially when the little boy is looking out the window, it’s flows continually.

2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc.
I really like the soundtrack; it gives a sort of adrenaline rush, it sets the atmosphere very nicely, and goes very well with the storyline. The music used during the nightmare scene was very good, it portrayed his feelings very well, and we as the audience could almost feel his struggle and pain.

3) What is your opinion on the storyline opening so far?
It seems like the whole film could be a very interesting story, as the beginning in my view, set a very firm foundation of thriller, and the way the sequence ended was like a cliff-hanger, very impactful. Somehow, the clip reminds me of A Nightmare on Elm Street, I think you did get your inspiration from there; also Inception comes to mind too. It would be fascinating to find out if this storyline will be similar or of a unique type, but I have to say the nightmare scene was very well thought out, as I enjoyed watching that part.

4) What do you think about the acting skills?
I think the little boy’s acting was extremely good, I couldn’t help but watch over my favourite part which was the nightmare scene; I could feel his emotion in that part. He was very good. The parents also acted very naturally and came off as any other ordinary parents, everything wasn’t over-performed. It was very comfortable to watch.

5) Overall, what are your views based on the appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
I think this can be seen as a thriller, if understood well I feel this film will be an extremely interesting to watch, especially by those who are interested in action and adventure which is what this seems to be. All the elements included in this sequence are very complementing to the genre.

Audience Feedback 3

Gender: Male
Age: 16

1) What do you think about the camera work? – Shots, angles etc.
I noticed that there were various angles in each shot. I especially like the part where the camera circled the boy; I think it is a 180° shot, I think that part really added to the emotion of what the boy was feeling at the time. I also liked in the nightmare part, where the camera was slanted, I feel it set the tension the atmosphere.

2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc.
I really like the theme music, it sounds full of suspense and it fits well with the action that was going one. I also liked the voiceover; it’s quite creepy, because the tone sounded sarcastic as well as evil, it was quite chilling. I liked it, everything went well.

3) What is your opinion on the storyline opening so far?
I don’t know if the boy is going to die in the film or if he going to be the hero; from what I’ve seen so far, I think it would be really interesting to see him take on the villain. I think the concept is different, to see a young boy as the hero would be a great idea. Knowing that the genre is action and horror, it does keep me wondering how the storyline would be like. I liked what I have watched so far, and would have liked to see more.

Honestly, I think the beginning did drag a little, but I also know it is only an opening sequence, so after watching it, I thought that bit was a very good way to set the scene. Since the drama already had started, I can only assume the rest to be action-packed, I think this take is very unique, and tells the audience when it’s beginning that the rest of the movie is going to be like an adventure, this will definitely appeal to me. So I think this is a very good thriller.

Audience Feedback 2

Gender: Female
Age: 19

1) What do you think about the camera work? – Shots, angles etc.
It is very excellent! I can see a lot of effort has been put into this. As a media student myself, from my own experience, I can admit, to avoid the amount of takes I would have to shoot different angles, I kept the some of my sequence at one level and increased the effects while editing. However your skills are showing through from your impressive camerawork, you managed to cover low to high angles as well as used different types of shots from wide to close, and the continuity is flawless in my opinion. Good work!

2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc.
The choice of your BGM was very suitable to your genre which I know is action/horror. The timing of all the transitions is on point and everything managed to flow smoothly. The Echo sound effect enhanced the mood in the atmosphere, which I felt was very effective.

3) What is your opinion on the storyline opening so far?
It seems like a very adventurous type of storyline, which is quite exciting. It’s intriguing in a sense I want to watch what is to come next and what obstacles this boy is going to face and whether he even survives. The way the clip ends surely increases anticipation of what is going to happen to the little boy.

4) What do you think about the acting skills?
I think the boy’s acting was very sincere, especially in the nightmare scene, but there were areas where his acting seemed a little over-exaggerated, however it didn’t put me off. On the whole the parents’ acting as well as the little boy’s was nicely performed.

5) Overall, what are your views based on the appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
I can agree this sequence does follow the conventions of a thriller without a doubt, there is nothing to fault. Although I can point out the lighting during the television scene seems to be a little off, and when there is a shot reverse shot between the boy and the television, the lighting seems a little off; I presume there was a mistake in editing. Overall, it is a very good sequence.

Audience Feedback 1

Gender: Female
Age: 17

1) What do you think about the camera work? – Shots, angles etc.
I think the camerawork is really good; it gives off a professional feel. I’ve seen different media works, but these shots are of a different standard; I really like how it flows. Also the angles add to the effect, I really like it when the nightmare bit started, the camera was sort of moving in a sort of circular motion, that bit was especially very good.

2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc.
The background music and sound effects were very good; it creates a good dramatic atmosphere. Everything was very clear for me to understand, the dialogue wasn’t too loud or too quiet, also the echo effects in parts are really cool, I wasn’t really expecting it, I think it went very well with the whole sequence.

3) What is your opinion on the storyline opening so far?
I think it was easy to understand and not too exaggerated. It was a good storyline overall. I enjoyed watching it.

4) What do you think about the acting skills?
The acting was realistic for most parts, but the boy’s acting seemed unnatural in a few places, like for example, after he had switched the T.V off. But in his emotional part, I really like his acting, it was very good. I liked the mum and dad’s acting on the whole, it seemed very natural.

5) Overall, what are your views based on the appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
I think the whole sequence was very good. I think this can be classed as a really good thriller, but there are little slip-ups here and there, for example, the blood on the boy’s wrists did seem a little blatantly fake, and u could tell it wasn’t real. But I think, those things can be overlooked, because I liked it.

Use of Copyright Material Request - The Evil Dead

I had written out a formal letter to send via email to the President of New Line Production, Toby Emmerich; whereby the company New Line Cinema distributed the movie we had used, The Evil Dead. However, since it is an American company, it was difficult to find contact details, as there were certain regulations in place to be allowed to access details, with exceptions if there were business connections. I had even tried to contact through their official website, but it hadn't allowed me to access the email page.

Below is the document I was going to send to the company :

Questionnaire 1
1) What do you think about the camera work? - shots, angles etc
I really like the shot where in his dream, it’s canted and you can tell it’s a dream because it’s unrealistic and it has more of a dramatic effect. Also I like the 180° shot because it has a lot of impulse and it kept me on edge.
2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc.
I really like how there is a different type of music played when it’s his dream compared to real life. At the beginning I like how the music build up and creates more tension, and then in his dream it’s very sad and sympathetic, which then changes back to the same music which was in the beginning, and from then it has a lot of impulse and keeps the audience on edge.
3) What is your opinion on the storyline so far?
I really like the storyline, because there’s a big twist and you can follow it easily. It’s really unique and not a typical horror like other film. This way it’s keeping the audience interested.
4) What do you think about the acting skills?
I think they were really great, because you could feel the emotions of the character. For example, the scene which came after the dream was very tense as the main character was in pain due to his wrists, and the way he acted out the emotions really connected with me.
5) Overall, what are your views based on appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
It has met the requirements, because it is an original and a unique storyline. It shows that there will be some action involved as well, and really grabs the audience’s attention. The opening sequence shows what the overall film would be about and makes you feel scared.

Questionnaire 2
1) What do you think about the camera work? - shots, angles etc
The camera work is good; you have used a variety of shots and angles. You’ve used a 180° shot which creates a bit of action and the continuity is very good.
2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc
The music fits well and tells a story as there is a limited amount of speech used. The sound effects make you understand what is going on e.g. the bit when he goes into the dream.
3) What is your opinion on the storyline so far?
It’s very good, as you can follow it easily, and it isn’t confusing. You’ve made it clear on who the characters are and what’s happening to them.
4) What do you think about the acting skills?
The acting skills are believable and you feel tension when the boy is tied up. This makes the audience feel tense as they don’t know what is happening next, this is due to the acting skills.
5) Overall, what are your views based on appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
The overall scene is good as it gives an overview of what the film is about. As an opening scene, it creates the atmosphere which is good as it makes the audience to keep watching. There are a few hidden twists in the opening sequence which makes the audience think about the others throughout the film. The requirements make you feel scared.

Questionnaire 3
1) What do you think about the camera work? - Shots, angles etc
They were really great, I loved them! I think you have a range of angles and it really gives the 3D experience. Due to the angles, I can automatically assume that you’re filming in a house. This is established within the first couple of seconds into the video.
2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? - Background music, sound effects etc
I feel that the music/soundtrack really adds extra texture to the sequence as a whole. The fact that it is sync with the actions of the actors, the background music gives off the idea that the opening is perhaps a thriller/horror. This establishment lets me as an audience know if it’s going to be a movie I will like or not. The sound effect enhances the movie and adds emphasis to certain aspects to the movie, making it more exciting and interesting.
3) What is your opinion on the storyline so far?
The storyline so far is very simplistic which I feel is very essential in the opening of a movie, as for when too much is going on it is easy to lose track of what’s going on. I personally don’t like being crammed with too much information as it can ruin the movie. However, the opening is easy to keep track showing the movie is establishing what it is about. Me as an audience can take a prediction on what it may be about, which is a child whose dreams contradict with reality.
4) What do you think about the acting skills?
The acting skills are excellent, the fact I do not notice is that there is no hint of the actors trying to act, makes it seem more natural and realistic. This is something I like most about the opening sequence. Also by making it look natural shows that something can happen in real life. The actors, especially the main character really reflects on myself.
5) Overall, what are your views based on appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
It definitely does, one thing I’ve realised is that over the years people have become less scared of these thriller movies, and more ideas have to be made to keep people scared of these films. This movie definitely does this through turning reality against you. The introduction of the movie shows a child and his parents who resemble a typical family, this makes the intro more frightening as it is based on reality rather than just it being non-fictional.

Questionnaire 4
1) What do you think about the camera work? – Shots, angles etc
It was really good because the camera wasn’t shaking, therefore it looked professional. Especially the 180° shot, made the tension and impulse build up.
2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? – Background music, sound effects etc
I really liked the sound effects, especially the voice over because it was eerie and creepy. Also the heartbeat which is used before he falls into a trance, builds up not only tension but the characters emotion showing he is really affected by the footage.
3) What is your opinion on the storyline so far?
I like how it is vague and and you get some idea of the whole storyline, therefore this makes the audience want to know what will happen afterwards.
4) What do you think about the acting skills?
The acting was really could and realistic. I really like it when it was the dream and you could feel that the main character was suffering.
5) Overall, what are your views based on appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
I usually get really scared at thrillers and horrors, and I think this did the job. It was also unique because of the storyline, and it becomes more frightening to you.

Questionnaire 5
1) What do you think about the camera work? – Shots, angles etc
I thought they were very good. You used a variety of angles and shots concentrating on the main character. I really liked the canted shot in the dream sequence and the 180° shot, as it built tension throughout.
2) What do you think about the music/soundtrack? – Background music, sound effects etc
The soundtrack was very good and was in sync with the action by the character. The sound effect of the heartbeat built the tension of Sai’s reaction.
3) What is your opinion on the storyline so far?
Overall, the opening had shown the main points of the storyline where the main character’s dream comes into reality. I thought the storyline so far is excellent as it left me on edge from what could have happened next.
4) What do you think about the acting skills?
The acting skills were brilliant! They showed enthusiasm and got into their character very well and also appeared natural.
5) Overall, what are your views based on appeal and characteristics of a general thriller, and whether our thriller meets these requirements?
